Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development in Akwa Ibom State Oil and Gas Communities, South South Nigeria

This study evaluates the impact of corporate social responsibility initiatives implemented by oil and gas companies on community development outcomes in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria. Oil-bearing communities in Akwa Ibom have hosted petroleum extraction for decades, yet persistent poverty, environmental pollution, and inadequate infrastructure suggest a disconnect between corporate social responsibility spending and genuine community welfare improvements. Drawing on stakeholder theory and recent corporate social responsibility literature from 2019 to 2024, the study adopts a descriptive survey design. Data are collected from 240 community members, local government officials, and corporate social responsibility managers across three oil-producing local government areas using structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are employed. Findings are expected to reveal that corporate social responsibility spending is often ad hoc, insufficiently community-informed, and concentrated in non-strategic areas with limited transformative potential. The study also explores the role of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission's community development guidelines in shaping company behaviour. Recommendations will target shifting corporate social responsibility models towards participatory community needs assessments, multi-year strategic investment plans, and transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms. The study contributes to the broader discourse on resource governance and sustainable community development in Nigeria's oil-producing region.
