Knowledge and Practice of Infection Prevention and Control Among Healthcare Workers at a Secondary Hospital in Taraba State

Background: Infection prevention and control practices are fundamental to patient safety and occupational health in healthcare facilities. This study assesses knowledge and practice of infection prevention and control among healthcare workers at a general hospital in Jalingo, Taraba State, in the North East geopolitical zone. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study enrolled 200 healthcare workers including doctors, nurses, and community health officers using total enumeration. A structured questionnaire and direct observation checklist assessed hand hygiene, personal protective equipment use, and waste management practices. Results: Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles was adequate among most respondents; however, actual observed practices fell short of recommended standards. Non-availability of personal protective equipment and alcohol-based hand rub were commonly reported barriers. Knowledge scores were highest among nurses and lowest among auxiliary workers. Conclusion: The gap between knowledge and practice of infection prevention and control in Taraba State is a patient safety concern requiring urgent attention. Family medicine departments should champion training programmes, ensure adequate supplies, and implement regular practice audits in collaboration with hospital infection control committees.
