The European Union’s Role in Promoting Gender Equality Policies in South-South Nigeria

This research explores how the European Union, through its development programmes and diplomatic engagement, has supported gender equality policy initiatives in South-South Nigeria, with reference to Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States. Gender inequality remains a significant development challenge in Nigeria, with South-South states recording some of the country's most acute gender-based violence and female economic marginalisation indicators. The EU has deployed targeted funding through mechanisms such as the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative and bilateral programmes to address these challenges. This descriptive study combines secondary analysis of EU programme reports and Nigerian National Gender Policy documents with structured interviews conducted among women's rights organisations in Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Uyo between 2022 and 2024. The study investigates how EU-funded gender programmes have been designed, implemented, and received by local civil society actors, and the degree to which programme outcomes have been sustained after EU funding cycles end. Findings highlight both the catalytic role of EU funding in amplifying local advocacy and the sustainability challenges that arise when programmes are not anchored in domestic government budgets. The research contributes to undergraduate understanding of how European normative frameworks around gender equality are translated into programming in Nigerian contexts.
