The Influence of European Fashion Industry Standards on Nigeria’s Emerging Textile Sector

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explores how standards, aesthetics, and sustainability requirements emanating from the European fashion industry have influenced Nigeria's emerging textile and fashion sector, with focus on fashion enterprises in Lagos and Aba. Nigeria is home to a dynamic and growing fashion ecosystem that has attracted increasing international attention, yet the sector faces both opportunities and pressures arising from European fashion industry norms. This descriptive research draws on secondary literature published between 2020 and 2024, including industry reports from the British Fashion Council, EU sustainable textile strategy documents, and profiles of Nigerian fashion entrepreneurs featured in international trade publications. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fashion designers, fabric suppliers, and textile manufacturers in Lagos (South-West) and Aba (South-East). The study examines how European sustainability requirements, particularly the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, are beginning to influence sourcing and production practices among Nigerian fashion enterprises that target export markets. It also critically assesses whether European fashion standards create barriers to entry for Nigerian producers or present opportunities for premium market positioning. Findings contribute to undergraduate discourse on the intersection of European trade norms, cultural aesthetics, and African entrepreneurship in the global fashion value chain. Keywords: European fashion industry, Nigeria textile sector, sustainability standards, Lagos, Aba fashion.
