Austria-Nigeria Relations: Examining the Role of Vienna-Based Diaspora Organisations in Development

This study examines the bilateral relationship between Austria and Nigeria through the lens of development contributions made by Nigerian diaspora organisations based in Vienna. While Austria is not among the most prominent European bilateral partners for Nigeria, Vienna's position as a hub for international organisations and its growing Nigerian diaspora community make it a relevant case study for understanding the intersection of diaspora networks and development cooperation. This descriptive research draws on secondary literature on diaspora development contributions in Africa published between 2019 and 2024, along with interviews conducted with representatives of Nigerian community associations and diaspora organisations in Vienna during 2023 and 2024. The study examines the profile and activities of Nigerian diaspora groups in Austria, their remittance and philanthropic contributions to communities in Nigeria, and their engagement with Austrian development organisations such as the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). The research also considers how the Austrian government's migration and integration policies shape the operational environment for Nigerian diaspora organisations in Vienna. Geographic origins of diaspora respondents are distributed across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, including South-East, North-West, and South-West. Findings contribute to undergraduate understanding of diaspora as a bridge in European-Nigerian bilateral relations.
