Environmental forensics applies scientific analysis to identify the source, timing, and responsible parties of environmental contamination events, a capability of critical importance in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta region. This study examines environmental forensic methods used in oil spill attribution investigations in Bayelsa State communities between 2019 and 2024. A descriptive field-based design was employed, involving soil and water sample collection from fifteen spill sites, review of twenty-three spill investigation reports from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and interviews with ten environmental scientists and community liaison officers. Samples were analysed for hydrocarbon fingerprinting and biomarker ratios to determine origin as operational spill or sabotage. Findings reveal that NOSDRA investigations are frequently contested by host communities on grounds of inadequate forensic rigour, with attribution outcomes influencing compensation eligibility. Hydrocarbon fingerprinting results in eleven of fifteen sites supported sabotage attribution, though the evidentiary standard applied to these findings was inconsistent across investigations. The study identifies capacity gaps in NOSDRA's forensic analytical protocols and recommends the adoption of internationally standardised oil fingerprinting methods, accredited laboratory analysis, and community-inclusive monitoring frameworks.
