Gas leaks at distribution stations pose significant safety, economic, and environmental risks, particularly in urban environments where population density amplifies potential consequences. This study examines the effectiveness of gas leak detection techniques employed at natural gas distribution stations in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), covering stations operated by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) gas facilities and independent gas distributors. The study adopts a technical assessment methodology involving field audits, interviews with station safety officers, and analysis of historical leak incident reports over a five-year period. Detection techniques evaluated include handheld flame ionisation detectors (FIDs), catalytic bead sensors, infrared gas analysers, and the traditional soap bubble test. The research investigates detection sensitivity, response time, false alarm rates, and operator training adequacy. Findings indicate that reliance on manual detection methods creates detection gaps particularly during non-operational hours, while electronic sensor networks are either absent or poorly maintained at many stations. The study further documents the correlation between inadequately detected minor leaks and subsequent major incidents. Recommendations include mandatory installation of fixed gas detection networks, regular sensor calibration, and the adoption of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for real-time monitoring.
