📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The supply of natural gas to high-rise residential and commercial buildings in Nigerian urban centres presents unique pressure regulation challenges that require specialised engineering solutions. This study examines the performance of gas pressure regulation equipment installed in selected high-rise buildings in Abuja, specifically focusing on district pressure regulators, meter regulators, and building service regulators. The research employs a field performance assessment methodology, combining pressure measurement surveys at various floors and usage points, regulator performance data analysis, and inspection of regulator condition and installation compliance. Buildings selected for the study include three residential towers in Maitama, a commercial complex in Central Business District, and a hotel in Wuse II. Performance parameters evaluated include outlet pressure accuracy under varying load conditions, response time to demand fluctuations, regulator lock-up behaviour, and over-pressure protection performance. The study investigates the adequacy of relief valve sizing and the frequency of preventive maintenance performed on pressure regulation trains. Findings indicate that pressure variations at upper-floor consumers exceed acceptable limits during peak morning and evening demand periods at two of the five studied buildings, attributable to undersized inlet regulators. Recommendations include mandatory gas pressure simulation during building design, periodic regulator performance testing, and development of building-specific gas pressure management guidelines by the NMDPRA. Keywords: gas pressure regulation, high-rise buildings, Abuja, pressure regulator, building services.
