Stress Management Practices and Employee Health Outcomes in Nigerian Police Force Personnel in Zamfara State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines stress management practices and their relationship with health outcomes among officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Zamfara State, North West Nigeria. Police personnel in Zamfara State operate in one of Nigeria's most security-volatile environments, where persistent armed banditry and community conflicts expose officers to chronic occupational stress with significant health consequences. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 145 police officers of various ranks through validated questionnaires. The study draws on Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and recent literature on occupational health in high-risk public safety professions. Findings reveal that officers who have access to structured stress management interventions, including psychological counselling, recreational facilities, and regulated duty rosters, report significantly better physical and mental health outcomes. Conversely, officers subjected to continuous high-risk deployments without adequate recovery periods show elevated rates of hypertension, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. The absence of a formal employee assistance program within the Zamfara State Police Command is identified as a critical institutional gap. The study recommends the deployment of resident police welfare officers in commands, regular psychosocial debriefing sessions after violent incidents, and health-screening protocols embedded in annual performance assessments. This research contributes to occupational health literature in Nigeria's security sector and provides evidence-based recommendations for the Nigeria Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police.
