Corporate Social Responsibility and Employee Pride in Nigerian Cement Companies: A Study of Dangote Cement in Gboko, Benue State

This study examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and employee pride of association in Dangote Cement Company in Gboko, Benue State, North Central Nigeria. CSR programs in Nigeria's industrial sector have increasingly been linked to community development and brand equity, but their internal HR benefits, particularly in shaping how employees feel about their employer, remain underexplored. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were gathered from 145 employees across production, administration, and community relations departments using structured questionnaires. The study is theoretically anchored on Organizational Identification Theory and Social Identity Theory, alongside recent literature on CSR and employer branding in emerging markets. Findings show that employees who are aware of and involved in the company's CSR programs, including local infrastructure development, scholarship schemes, and environmental sustainability projects, report significantly higher levels of pride of association and organizational identification. The study further reveals that CSR visibility within the Gboko host community enhances employee sense of social purpose, which translates into reduced absenteeism and stronger willingness to recommend the company as an employer of choice. Employees who personally benefit from CSR programs such as health outreach and housing support show the highest pride and commitment scores. Recommendations include greater internal communication of CSR achievements, expansion of employee volunteering programs, and integration of community engagement metrics into HR performance frameworks.
