📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This research investigates cross-cultural negotiation styles and their implications for business outcomes in pharmaceutical trade between Nigerian firms and their Indian counterparts. India is Nigeria's leading source of generic pharmaceutical imports, and the bilateral trade relationship involves complex procurement negotiations between Nigerian pharmaceutical distributors, hospital procurement officers, and Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers and exporters. Cultural differences in communication styles, relationship orientation, time perception, and authority structures create negotiation dynamics that significantly influence contract terms, pricing outcomes, and long-term partnership sustainability. The study adopts a qualitative design employing in-depth interviews with 35 Nigerian pharmaceutical procurement executives and trade association representatives with direct India negotiation experience, supplemented by analysis of documented negotiation case studies. Thematic analysis and cross-cultural comparison are applied. The theoretical framework draws on Hofstede's cultural dimensions, Hall's high-context versus low-context communication theory, and the international negotiation literature. The study documents distinct negotiation behaviours attributed to cultural origins, including differences in directness, use of intermediaries, price anchoring strategies, and post-negotiation relationship maintenance expectations. Findings are expected to reveal that Nigerian negotiators who develop cultural competence in Indian business practices achieve more favourable contract terms and more durable supplier relationships than those who approach negotiations with culturally uninformed strategies. Recommendations include targeted cross-cultural negotiation training for Nigerian pharmaceutical procurement professionals and the development of bilateral trade association facilitation services.
