Digital Technology Adoption and Supply Chain Visibility Among SMEs in Enugu State, South East Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the relationship between digital technology adoption and supply chain visibility among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Supply chain visibility, defined as the real-time ability to track goods, orders, and supplier activities across the chain, is increasingly recognised as a key driver of logistics efficiency and responsiveness. However, many SMEs in Enugu remain constrained by limited digital infrastructure, low technology literacy, and the high cost of enterprise software solutions. The research employs a descriptive survey design with structured questionnaires distributed to 130 SME owners and logistics managers across manufacturing, trading, and service sectors in the Enugu metropolis. Technology adoption is measured by use of inventory management software, mobile logistics platforms, and digital supplier communication tools. Supply chain visibility is assessed through order tracking capability, demand forecasting accuracy, and supplier lead time transparency. Pearson correlation and simple regression analyses are used to establish the nature and magnitude of the relationship between the two variables. The study draws on the Technology Acceptance Model and recent literature on digital transformation in African SME supply chains. Findings are expected to show a moderate but statistically significant positive relationship between technology adoption and visibility, with practical recommendations on cost-appropriate digital tools suitable for resource-limited SMEs in South East Nigeria. Keywords: digital technology, supply chain visibility, SMEs, Enugu State, technology adoption.
