📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the effects of material handling equipment on warehouse productivity in food distribution companies in Onitsha, Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Onitsha, as a major distribution node for food commodities in South East and South South Nigeria, hosts numerous wholesale and retail food distributors whose warehouse operations directly affect distribution speed and product integrity. Material handling equipment, including forklifts, pallet trucks, conveyors, and racking systems, can significantly reduce manual labour dependency and accelerate order processing when properly deployed. Using a descriptive survey design, structured questionnaires were administered to 85 warehouse managers, supervisors, and equipment operators across 15 food distribution companies in Onitsha. The study measures equipment type, availability, and utilisation rate as independent variables, while warehouse productivity is assessed through picking speed, order processing time per pallet, and stock replenishment cycle duration. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are applied. The study draws on warehouse management and operations research literature published between 2020 and 2024. Findings are expected to show that companies with higher equipment utilisation rates demonstrate significantly better productivity metrics, though equipment maintenance costs and operator training remain critical moderating factors. Recommendations are addressed to warehouse managers, equipment leasing firms, and logistics sector associations on cost-effective equipment investment strategies suited to the scale and product mix of food distributors in Onitsha.
