The Use of Music Therapy Techniques in Managing Anxiety Among Patients in University of Calabar Teaching Hospital

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explores the application of music therapy techniques in managing anxiety among patients admitted at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Cross River State, South South Nigeria. Anxiety is a prevalent psychological condition among hospitalised patients, often exacerbating physical symptoms and impeding recovery. Recent clinical research has demonstrated the efficacy of music-based interventions in reducing anxiety levels, lowering blood pressure, and improving patient wellbeing in healthcare settings. This research assesses the current awareness and use of music therapy among healthcare professionals at UCTH and evaluates patient responses to guided music listening sessions implemented during a four-week pilot intervention. A mixed-methods design is employed, combining pre-test and post-test anxiety assessments using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory with qualitative interviews capturing patient and nurse perspectives. A purposive sample of 40 patients across medical and surgical wards participates in the intervention. Data are analysed using paired t-tests and thematic coding respectively. The study is grounded in recent music therapy literature and biopsychosocial frameworks of patient care. Findings are expected to demonstrate statistically significant reductions in anxiety scores following music intervention and will support recommendations for integrating certified music therapy services into Nigerian hospital care protocols.
