Survey of Music Technology Resources in Nigerian Federal Universities: A Case Study of University of Abuja

This study surveys the availability, adequacy, and utilisation of music technology resources in the Department of Music at the University of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, North Central Nigeria. The integration of music technology into university music curricula has become an essential component of contemporary music education globally, encompassing digital audio workstations, MIDI equipment, music notation software, recording studios, and electronic instruments. This research assesses whether existing facilities at the University of Abuja meet minimum standards for effective music technology instruction and compares findings against benchmarks established by recent African music education policy frameworks. A descriptive survey design is used, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 20 music lecturers and 80 students across all levels of the music programme. Additional data are gathered through direct facility inspection using an equipment checklist and interviews with the department head and technical staff. The study identifies gaps between available resources and curriculum requirements and investigates how students compensate for equipment shortfalls through personal devices and off-campus facilities. Findings are expected to reveal significant disparities between policy aspirations and on-ground reality in music technology provision at the institution. Recommendations target university management, the National Universities Commission, and the Federal Ministry of Education.
