Musical Preferences and Listening Habits of Elderly Residents in Nursing Homes in Abuja

This study investigates the musical preferences and listening habits of elderly residents in selected nursing homes in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. Music is increasingly recognised as a powerful tool for enhancing quality of life among older adults, with documented benefits for mood regulation, memory recall, and social engagement. However, research addressing the musical preferences of elderly Nigerians in institutional care settings remains sparse. This study identifies the genres, artists, and musical traditions most meaningful to residents across different Nigerian ethnic and cultural backgrounds represented in Abuja nursing homes. A descriptive qualitative design is employed, incorporating structured interviews, a musical preference questionnaire, and guided listening sessions with 60 residents drawn from three private nursing homes. Cultural and generational factors shaping musical preference are analysed, including the significance of music associated with major life events. The study also assesses current practices among nursing home staff regarding music provision and identifies barriers to implementing structured music programming. Findings are expected to reveal highly personalised preference profiles reflecting Nigeria's diverse ethnocultural landscape and will inform recommendations for culturally responsive music programming in elder care facilities. This research bridges music, gerontology, and healthcare in a context where formal elder care institutions are emerging rapidly.
