Digital Music Distribution and Revenue Generation for Independent Artists in Port Harcourt

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates how independent music artists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria, utilise digital music distribution platforms to generate revenue and grow their professional careers. Digital distribution services such as DistroKid, TuneCore, and CD Baby have democratised access to global streaming platforms, enabling independent Nigerian artists to reach international audiences without traditional record label infrastructure. However, the extent to which artists in Port Harcourt effectively leverage these platforms for sustainable income remains largely unexplored. This research employs a descriptive survey and interview design, gathering data from 40 independent artists who have released music on digital platforms within the last three years. Data collection focuses on platform selection strategies, revenue amounts, marketing practices, and barriers encountered. Five digital distribution company representatives and 10 music industry professionals provide additional perspectives through semi-structured interviews. The study draws on music industry economics, digital media theory, and entrepreneurship literature relevant to the African creative economy. Findings are expected to reveal significant income disparities driven by differences in digital marketing competence, social media engagement, and understanding of streaming algorithm dynamics. Recommendations will provide practical guidelines for independent artists and advocate for music business training programmes in South South Nigeria. Keywords: Digital distribution, independent artists, streaming revenue, Port Harcourt, music business.
