Assessment of Intraocular Pressure Measurement Practices Among Ophthalmic Nurses in Federal Hospitals, Abuja

Accurate intraocular pressure measurement is a critical component of glaucoma screening and management, and the role of ophthalmic nurses in performing reliable tonometry is central to effective eye care delivery in Nigerian hospitals. This study assesses the knowledge and practices of intraocular pressure measurement among ophthalmic nurses at federal hospitals in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, North Central Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted among all ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic technicians working in ophthalmology units at three federal hospitals in Abuja. A structured self-administered questionnaire will evaluate knowledge of tonometry indications, technique, equipment maintenance, and infection control during IOP measurement. Direct observation of tonometry practice using a standardised checklist will supplement self-reported data. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests will examine associations between training level and practice quality. Inconsistent tonometry practices, including inadequate anaesthetic use, improper calibration, and poor infection control, have been identified in Nigerian ophthalmic workforce studies and can lead to inaccurate IOP readings, patient discomfort, and disease transmission risks. This study provides Abuja-specific data and will be shared with the ophthalmology units of National Hospital and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for staff development purposes. Recommendations will include structured in-service training, regular equipment calibration checks, and development of a standardised ophthalmic nursing competency framework. Improving the quality of tonometry practice among ophthalmic nurses is directly linked to better glaucoma detection and patient outcomes.
