Survey of Sports Participation Patterns Among Female Students in Federal Universities in the North East Zone

Female participation in university sports remains constrained by social, cultural, and institutional barriers in many Nigerian contexts, particularly in the North East geopolitical zone. This study surveys sports participation patterns and the associated barriers and motivators among female students in three federal universities located in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe States. A cross-sectional descriptive design was adopted, with 420 female students selected through proportional stratified sampling. A structured questionnaire capturing sports participation frequency, type of sports activities engaged in, motivating factors, and perceived barriers was administered. Findings indicate that only 34 percent of respondents participate in organised sports activities at least twice weekly, with the majority citing limited access to female-friendly facilities, time constraints from academic demands, lack of female sports coaches as role models, and family disapproval as primary participation barriers. Team sports including volleyball and basketball are the most commonly practised activities among participants, while individual endurance sports attract minimal female engagement. Scholarship opportunities and improved performance in physical education examinations serve as the strongest motivators for regular sports participation. The study identifies the absence of gender-sensitive sports policies at the institutional level as a systemic barrier to female athletic development. Recommendations include establishing female-only sports sessions, recruiting female physical education and sports coaches, and implementing university-level gender inclusion policies in sports.
