Dietary Fibre Intake, Gastrointestinal Transit Time, and Colorectal Health Indicators Among Urban Civil Servants in Enugu State, South East Nigeria

Background: Declining dietary fibre intake associated with urban dietary transitions in Nigeria has been linked to increased risk of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and colorectal cancer. Civil servants in urban South East Nigeria exemplify populations undergoing rapid dietary westernisation, yet their gastrointestinal physiological profiles are undercharacterised. Objectives: This study aims to quantify dietary fibre intake using a validated food frequency questionnaire, estimate gastrointestinal transit time using a validated radiopaque marker technique, and assess colorectal health indicators including defecation frequency, stool consistency, and self-reported colorectal symptoms among civil servants in Enugu State. Methods: One hundred civil servants aged 25 to 55 years will be recruited. Three-day dietary records will estimate daily fibre intake. Transit time estimation will follow a three-day radiopaque marker protocol. Stool consistency will be classified using the Bristol Stool Form Scale. Pearson correlation and regression analysis will examine relationships between fibre intake and gastrointestinal parameters. Expected Outcomes: Participants with lower fibre intake are anticipated to demonstrate longer transit times, harder stools, and greater symptom burden, confirming the dietary fibre-gut health relationship in this Nigerian urban cohort. Conclusion: Results will support dietary modification counselling programmes for civil servants in South East Nigeria.
