Professional Review of Physics Laboratory Safety and Equipment Management in Federal Universities in the North East Zone

Physics laboratories in Nigerian federal universities handle a range of hazardous materials and equipment including radioactive sources, high-voltage apparatus, laser systems, and chemical reagents, yet systematic safety audits of these environments are rarely conducted. This study performs a professional safety and equipment management review of physics department laboratories in four federal universities located in Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Borno States in the North East geopolitical zone. An audit checklist adapted from the American Chemical Society laboratory safety guidelines and the Nigerian Universities Commission quality assurance benchmarks was applied. Assessment dimensions include fire suppression and emergency evacuation provision, personal protective equipment availability and training, electrical safety compliance, radioactive source inventory and storage adequacy, equipment calibration records, and student safety induction documentation. Forty-four laboratory staff including senior technologists, assistant technologists, and demonstrators were interviewed using structured questionnaires. Results indicate a mean safety compliance score of 54 percent across assessed laboratories, with highest scores in fire safety and lowest compliance in radiation source documentation and electrical panel safety. Equipment maintenance records were incomplete or absent for 68 percent of laboratory instruments older than five years. The study benchmarks findings against similar assessments conducted in South African and Ghanaian university laboratories and identifies systemic resource allocation and administrative commitment gaps unique to the North East zone context. A comprehensive laboratory safety improvement framework tailored to the operational realities of Nigerian federal universities is presented.
