Implementation of a Computer-Based Test System for UNIZIK Pre-Degree Programme

Pre-degree programmes at Nigerian universities face logistical challenges in conducting large-scale assessments reliably, with paper-based tests prone to leakage, marking delays, and result inconsistencies. This study implements a computer-based test (CBT) system for the Pre-Degree Programme at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, designed to support simultaneous large-cohort examinations with automated marking, instant result display, and a question bank management interface. The system was developed using PHP and MySQL for the backend, with a JavaScript-driven exam interface featuring countdown timers, question navigation, and session security controls. Question randomization was implemented at both the question and option levels. The CBT system was deployed on UNIZIK's local area network and piloted with 300 pre-degree students during a mock examination session. Results indicate that the system handled 300 concurrent examinees with no performance degradation, maintaining page response times below two seconds throughout. Automated marking reduced result processing time from three days to under 15 minutes. Question paper leakage incidents were eliminated by design. Overall student experience ratings averaged 4.0 out of 5, with 91 percent preferring the CBT format over paper-based tests. The study concludes that locally developed CBT platforms are a cost-effective and scalable assessment solution for UNIZIK's pre-degree cohort. Recommendations include expanding to remedial and undergraduate supplementary examinations.
