Morphometric Analysis of the Hard Palate and Its Implications for Prosthodontics Among Adults in Enugu State

The hard palate forms the anterior two-thirds of the roof of the mouth and is the principal anatomical site for the retention of complete upper dentures. Its dimensions and shape significantly influence denture design, fit, and patient comfort. Accurate morphometric data on the hard palate specific to Nigerian populations are essential for dental laboratories to produce prostheses that minimise adjustment requirements and improve patient outcomes. This study aims to document the length, width, vault height, and palatal form among dentate adults attending the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital dental clinic, South East Nigeria. Palatal casts will be obtained from consenting participants, and measurements will be taken using Vernier callipers and a palatal depth gauge. Data will be classified by palatal form as flat, medium, or high vault, and analysed for sex differences. The study anticipates producing hard palate morphometric norms applicable to prosthodontics practitioners in Enugu State, reducing reliance on non-Nigerian dental reference data and improving the clinical quality of upper dentures fabricated within the region.
