📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Sciatic nerve palsy following intramuscular injections administered into the upper gluteal region represents one of the most preventable causes of childhood disability in Nigeria. Injection-induced sciatic nerve damage can result in permanent foot drop, muscle wasting, and chronic limb shortening, causing lifelong disability. Continued occurrence of this complication suggests persistent deficits in anatomy-based injection practice despite known preventative protocols. This study aims to conduct an anatomical audit of intramuscular injection practices contributing to sciatic nerve injury among paediatric patients presenting to specialist clinics at Katsina State General Hospital and Federal Medical Centre Katsina, North West Nigeria. Case records of children presenting with injection-induced limb palsy will be reviewed, and interviews conducted with parents and attending healthcare workers to document injection site selection practices. The anatomical basis of injury in each case will be mapped against standard safe injection zone guidelines. The study anticipates identifying specific anatomical misunderstandings driving this preventable complication and providing recommendations for anatomy-based remedial training for healthcare workers across paediatric services in Katsina State.
