The Emergence of African Pentecostalism and Its Theological Distinctives: A Study of Nigerian Contributions

African Pentecostalism, and the Nigerian Pentecostal movement in particular, has become a globally significant religious force with theological emphases that are distinctively shaped by African worldviews, colonial history, and post-independence social context. This study analyses the theological distinctives of Nigerian Pentecostalism, examining its contributions to global Pentecostal theology and the extent to which it represents an authentically African theological development. A systematic analytical methodology was adopted, examining the theological writings, sermon collections, and doctrinal statements of twenty influential Nigerian Pentecostal leaders from the 1970s to 2023, analysed through a comparative theological framework that distinguishes between global Pentecostal theology and African-specific theological innovations. Theological themes analysed include pneumatology, soteriology, deliverance theology, prosperity theology, and ecclesiology. Results indicate that Nigerian Pentecostalism makes distinctive contributions in the areas of spiritual warfare theology, healing praxis, and the integration of community-oriented spiritual power concepts that differ meaningfully from North American Pentecostal equivalents. The influence of traditional African religion on spiritual warfare theology is documented and theorised. The study fills an analytical gap in the African theology literature by providing a systematic theological analysis of Nigerian Pentecostal distinctives, and contributes original classification of what constitutes specifically Nigerian theological contribution versus Western Pentecostal importation. It recommends that African theological studies programmes include systematic courses on African Pentecostal theology.
