Xenophon’s Anabasis and Themes of Leadership Under Adversity in Nigerian Military History

Xenophon's Anabasis, the account of the famous retreat of ten thousand Greek mercenaries through hostile Persian territory under improvised leadership, is a canonical text in military leadership studies and has been used in officer training globally. This study examines the relevance of Xenophon's leadership models in the Anabasis to documented cases of leadership under adversity in Nigerian military history, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War (1967 to 1970) and the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North East. A comparative biographical-historical methodology was adopted, analysing Xenophon's self-presentation as a democratic, consensus-building field commander alongside published accounts of leadership by Nigerian military figures including Murtala Mohammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, and contemporary North East operations commanders. Military history scholarship on both the Anabasis and Nigerian conflicts from 2018 to 2023 informed the analysis. Findings indicate strong parallels in improvised logistics management, the morale function of leadership rhetoric, and the critical role of decision-making under uncertain information, all of which Xenophon documents in analytic detail applicable to modern military contexts. The study concludes that Xenophon's Anabasis provides durable and analytically rigorous models for military leadership study and recommends its inclusion in the curricula of the Nigerian Defence Academy and Command and Staff College.
