Classical Heritage Tourism in Nigeria: Developing Professional Standards for Classical Sites Management

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Nigeria's engagement with its classical heritage in the broadest sense, encompassing Roman-era North African trade contacts, Nok and Ife classical artistic traditions, and the colonial-era transmission of classical education, creates opportunities for heritage tourism that requires professional management standards. This study develops professional standards for classical heritage tourism management in Nigeria, drawing on international frameworks and Nigerian heritage contexts. A professional standards development methodology was adopted, drawing on UNESCO World Heritage Convention guidelines, ICOMOS heritage tourism principles, and the National Policy on Tourism (2021) alongside professional consultations with 20 heritage tourism operators, ten academic heritage specialists, and eight National Commission for Museums and Monuments officials. Site assessments at five heritage locations with classical significance, including Nok culture sites in Kaduna State and colonial-era classical architecture in Lagos Island, provided contextual data. Findings reveal the absence of any Nigeria-specific classical heritage tourism management standards. International tourism operators express consistent interest in classical heritage itineraries connecting North African Roman sites with Nigerian Nok and trans-Saharan heritage. Community benefit-sharing frameworks are absent from all assessed sites. The study proposes a Nigerian Classical Heritage Tourism Professional Standards Framework comprising five sections: site integrity management, interpretation quality, community partnership, visitor safety, and sustainability benchmarks. Adoption by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation is recommended.
