An Original Investigation of Trans-Saharan Intellectual Networks and Classical Knowledge Transmission to Pre-Colonial Nigeria

The transmission of classical Greek and Roman intellectual traditions to sub-Saharan Africa operated not only through the colonial educational system but also, and earlier, through trans-Saharan intellectual networks linking the Islamic scholarly world of North Africa with the West African Sahel and savanna belt. This study investigates the routes, mechanisms, and intellectual content of classical knowledge transmission to what is now Nigeria through pre-colonial trans-Saharan networks, constituting an original contribution to both Classical Studies and African intellectual history. A multi-disciplinary original research methodology was adopted, integrating Arabic manuscript analysis (drawing on the Maiduguri and Kano Islamic manuscript collections and the Arabic manuscript libraries of Sokoto and Timbuktu), historical network analysis of documented scholarly migration routes between North Africa and Northern Nigeria, and field interviews with twenty Arabic manuscript specialists, Islamic scholars, and historians at northern Nigerian universities. The study traces the transmission of Aristotelian logic (mantiq), Neoplatonic cosmological concepts, and Greek mathematical and astronomical traditions through the Arabic scholarly tradition into the Kanem-Bornu and Hausa scholarly networks. Findings provide original documentation of classical intellectual content in Northern Nigerian pre-colonial Arabic scholarship, including identifiable Stoic ethical categories embedded in Sufi moral philosophy texts from the Sokoto Caliphate period. The study constitutes an original contribution to the pre-colonial history of classical knowledge in West Africa and models a trans-disciplinary methodology for related research.
