An Original Theoretical Analysis of the Role of Classical Antiquity in the Formation of Nigerian National Identity (1900-2023)

The role of classical antiquity in shaping Nigerian national identity has been mediated through colonial education, elite institutional culture, literary nationalism, constitutional discourse, and postcolonial cultural politics in ways that constitute a coherent but underanalysed historical phenomenon. This study provides an original theoretical analysis of the role of classical antiquity in Nigerian national identity formation from 1900 to 2023. A theoretical-historical methodology combining critical theory, national identity theory, and classical reception studies was adopted. The study constructs an original Classical Nationalism Matrix (CNM) to map and theorise how classical material has been selectively deployed in different phases of Nigerian identity formation. Primary historical sources, literary and legal texts, political speeches, and archival materials were analysed across five historical phases: colonial education (1900 to 1960), nationalist literary renaissance (1958 to 1975), post-independence state-building (1960 to 1983), democratic consolidation (1999 to 2015), and contemporary cultural politics (2015 to 2023). Interviews with 35 literary critics, historians, and political scientists at the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and Ahmadu Bello University supplemented textual analysis. The CNM identifies four classical nationalism dynamics: legitimation (using classical precedent to validate nationalist claims), critique (deploying classical models to criticise colonial or post-colonial governance), differentiation (asserting African cultural equality with or superiority to classical traditions), and synthesis (creating new cultural identities drawing on both classical and African sources). The theoretical model constitutes an original contribution to national identity theory and classical reception studies.
