Assessment of Women’s Participation in Cooperative Societies and Its Effect on Household Welfare in Kogi State

Women's participation in cooperative societies is widely recognised as a pathway to economic empowerment and improved household welfare in developing economies. This study assessed the extent of women's participation in cooperative societies and examined its effects on household welfare indicators in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted among 160 female members of consumer, thrift, and agricultural cooperatives in Lokoja, Okene, and Idah Local Government Areas. Structured questionnaires collected data on cooperative participation levels, decision-making involvement, household income contributions, food security status, and children's education expenditure. Results indicated that 61.9 percent of women were active contributors in cooperative activities, but only 34.4 percent had held any elected leadership position. Household welfare indicators improved significantly among women with higher cooperative participation scores, including food security (p < 0.05) and education investment for children (p < 0.01). Barriers to full participation included domestic responsibilities, low educational attainment, and cultural norms that restrict women's financial autonomy. Women in urban cooperative branches showed higher participation rates than those in rural branches. The study concludes that cooperative participation enhances household welfare among women in Kogi State, but gender-specific barriers restrict the depth of engagement for many members. Recommendations include gender-responsive cooperative policies, flexible meeting schedules, and leadership development programmes targeted at female cooperative members.
