Assessment of Dividend Distribution Practices and Member Satisfaction in Cooperative Societies in Delta State

Dividend distribution is one of the most tangible benefits of cooperative membership and a key driver of member satisfaction and retention. This study assessed dividend distribution practices and their relationship with member satisfaction in cooperative societies in Delta State, South South Nigeria. A descriptive correlational survey was conducted among 195 members from sixteen cooperatives in Asaba, Warri, and Ughelli LGAs. Questionnaires measured the regularity and fairness of dividend payments, member satisfaction levels, and attitudes toward continued membership. Spearman rank correlation and regression analysis were applied. Results showed that dividend payments were made regularly in only 43.6 percent of cooperatives, and distribution was described as fair and transparently computed in only 51.3 percent. Member satisfaction was significantly and positively correlated with dividend regularity (r = 0.61; p < 0.001) and perceived fairness of distribution (r = 0.57; p < 0.001). Satisfaction was lower in cooperatives with a history of financial disputes. Members who had considered exiting the cooperative cited inconsistent dividends as the primary reason in 68.4 percent of cases. Cooperatives affiliated with the Delta State Cooperative Federation showed better dividend compliance than unaffiliated societies. The study concludes that irregular and opaque dividend distribution is a major driver of member dissatisfaction in Delta cooperatives and recommends standardised surplus distribution formulas, advance dividend forecasting, and mandatory member notification of declared dividends.
