Assessment of the Role of Cooperative Societies in Rural Development in Ebonyi State

Rural development encompasses improvements in economic productivity, infrastructure, social services, and community well-being, and cooperative societies have historically been positioned as vehicles for collective rural advancement. This study assessed the contribution of cooperative societies to rural development outcomes in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted among 195 cooperative members across six rural LGAs: Afikpo North, Ezza North, Ohaozara, Onicha, Izzi, and Ohaukwu. Structured questionnaires assessed cooperative contributions to agricultural productivity, rural credit access, women's economic participation, social welfare services, and community infrastructure development. Descriptive statistics and a development index constructed from the multiple outcome variables were computed per LGA for comparison. Results showed that cooperatives contributed to agricultural input access for 73.8 percent of members, and 31.3 percent reported that their cooperative had contributed to community welfare projects such as road clearing or school maintenance. Women's economic participation was improved for 66.2 percent of female members. However, cooperative contributions to infrastructure development were minimal, with formal community infrastructure projects reported in only 18.5 percent of surveyed societies. The study concludes that cooperatives make measurable but fragmented contributions to rural development in Ebonyi State, and recommends coordinated cooperative cluster development strategies that aggregate cooperative resources for community impact at the LGA level.
