A Complex Systems Approach to Understanding the Dynamics of Youth Mental Health in Nigerian Urban Settings

Youth mental health in Nigerian urban settings is shaped by non-linear, dynamic interactions among individual, family, peer, school, community, and societal factors that conventional linear causal models cannot adequately represent, and a complex systems theoretical approach offers a more epistemologically adequate framework for understanding and intervening in this multilevel phenomenon. This study developed an original complex systems framework for understanding youth mental health dynamics in urban Nigerian settings, using Lagos Island, Kano Municipal, and Enugu Urban as research sites. A multi-method complexity research design was employed, combining agent-based modelling with ethnographic qualitative fieldwork and longitudinal quantitative survey data. Agent-based simulation models were constructed from nine months of ethnographic data characterising youth-environment interactions in each city. Simulations explored how small changes in individual protective factors (social self-efficacy, family attachment quality) produced disproportionate system-level mental health improvements through social network contagion dynamics. Longitudinal survey data with 480 adolescents across 18 months confirmed key model predictions about non-linear tipping points in mental health trajectories associated with social network change events. The original Urban Youth Mental Health Complex Systems Framework identifies five leverage points for intervention: peer network bridging, school safety culture, family communication quality, spiritual community belonging, and urban green space access. Original theoretical contributions include the concept of resilience contagion, theorising how individual protective factor strengthening propagates beneficial effects through peer networks, and the vulnerability cascade model, describing how stressor accumulation triggers non-linear mental health deterioration. Expert review confirmed original theoretical and methodological contributions.
