A Theoretical Framework for Understanding the Psychological Impact of Poverty on Human Development Across the Life Course in Nigeria

Poverty is the most pervasive structural determinant of psychological development and wellbeing in Nigeria, yet a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding its mechanisms, pathways, and cumulative impacts across the life course, adapted to the specific Nigerian social ecology, is absent from the counselling and human development literature. This study developed an original theoretical framework for understanding poverty's psychological impact on human development across the life course in Nigeria. A theory-building methodology combining systematic review, secondary analysis of Nigeria-specific poverty and psychological wellbeing datasets, and expert consultation was employed. Systematic review of 76 publications on poverty and psychological development in Nigeria and comparable low-income contexts identified five theoretical domains requiring integration: early childhood developmental impacts, educational attainment disruptions, adolescent identity and aspiration limitations, working-age stress and capability deprivation, and older adult poverty-related dignity and care challenges. Secondary analysis of poverty and wellbeing datasets from the NBS, Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, and NDHS confirmed empirical patterns of poverty-related psychological harm across all life stages. The original Nigerian Poverty-Development Framework proposes a multi-level theoretical architecture spanning individual psychological mechanisms (cognitive load, threat hypervigilance, scarcity-induced tunnel vision), family system impacts (parenting quality, household conflict, educational investment), community structural effects (resource deprivation, social capital erosion, collective efficacy diminishment), and societal processes (class immobility, structural exclusion, aspirational gap). Counselling application frameworks are specified for each life stage. Expert review confirmed theoretical originality and policy relevance.
