Professional Evaluation of the ARTHOUSE Lagos Art Prize as a Mechanism for Emerging Artist Development

Art prizes serve as career catalysts for emerging artists, providing visibility, validation, financial support, and market access, and professional evaluation of established Nigerian art prizes contributes important evidence for arts funding policy and prize design improvement. This study professionally evaluated the ARTHOUSE Lagos Art Prize as a mechanism for emerging artist career development, examining three prize cycles from 2020 to 2022. A programme evaluation methodology drawing on professional evaluation frameworks was employed, combining documentary analysis of prize records, structured interviews with 18 prize finalists and 6 shortlisted artists from the three cycles, structured interviews with 4 prize organisers and 3 jurors, and analysis of long-term career outcomes for participating artists. Evaluation dimensions covered award process transparency and equity, juror expertise and composition, media visibility generated, artist income impact, exhibition opportunities created, and market access effects. Results showed that shortlisting for the prize generated measurable media visibility increases (mean social media follower growth of 847 percent for shortlisted artists during prize announcement periods). Commercial gallery enquiries following shortlisting were reported by 72.2 percent of finalists. Equity concerns were raised by 55.6 percent of respondents regarding geographic bias toward Lagos-based artists in the juror selection. Prize award values were rated as insufficient for career development by 77.8 percent. The study recommends enhanced prize values, geographic equity provisions in juror composition, and structured mentorship components alongside monetary awards to maximise career development impact.
