📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study conducts a gap analysis of the application of motivation theories to classroom teaching practices in Nigerian secondary schools, examining the discrepancy between theoretically established motivation-enhancing pedagogical strategies and actual classroom practice. Motivation theory, particularly self-determination theory, expectancy-value theory, and achievement goal theory, provides a rich evidence base for designing instruction that promotes student engagement and persistence. However, the extent to which Nigerian secondary school teachers are aware of and apply these theoretical insights is not well established empirically. Data were collected from 350 teachers across 25 secondary schools in Lagos, Kano, and Enugu through a structured questionnaire measuring theoretical awareness and practice frequency across 30 motivation-relevant teaching behaviours. A motivation theory application gap index was constructed by comparing awareness and practice scores. Structural equation modelling and descriptive analysis were applied. Results reveal a significant gap between theoretical awareness and classroom application, with an average application rate of 42 percent relative to awareness across all motivation dimensions. The largest gaps were found in autonomy-supportive teaching, mastery goal framing, and competence-building feedback practices. Teachers with post-graduate education qualifications showed significantly smaller gaps. The study concludes that motivation theory application gaps are large and systematic in Nigerian secondary schools. It recommends that teacher education programmes strengthen the applied pedagogy component of educational psychology courses, with practical demonstration, peer observation, and reflective practice portfolios to bridge theory and classroom application.
