School Effectiveness Models and Their Applicability to the Nigerian Secondary Education Context

This study critically examines the applicability of dominant school effectiveness models to the Nigerian secondary education context, through both theoretical analysis and empirical testing of effectiveness correlates across a sample of secondary schools. School effectiveness research, originating primarily in the United Kingdom and United States, has generated a body of models identifying factors consistently associated with high-performing schools. The transferability of these models to low and middle-income country contexts has been debated, yet the Nigerian secondary education literature has not engaged systematically with this question. A mixed-method design was adopted. Theoretical analysis examined the five major school effectiveness frameworks against Nigerian contextual factors. Empirical data were collected from 40 secondary schools in Ogun, Kano, and Rivers States, with school effectiveness rated using examination performance, pupil progression rates, and education inspector assessments. Regression analysis identified the contextual predictors of effectiveness in the Nigerian sample. Results reveal that leadership quality, curriculum coherence, and safe school environment are universally predictive of effectiveness across contexts, while parental involvement and school autonomy show context-dependent effects that operate differently in Nigeria compared to Western model assumptions. The study concludes that school effectiveness models require contextual adaptation for Nigerian application rather than wholesale adoption. It recommends that the Federal Ministry of Education commission a Nigeria-specific school effectiveness research programme to build an evidence base that captures local institutional dynamics and generates policy-relevant findings.
