📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Agribusiness clusters, defined as geographic concentrations of interconnected firms, producers, processors, and institutions along a commodity value chain, can generate competitive advantages through shared infrastructure, knowledge spillovers, and collective market access. In Kwara State, in Nigeria's North Central geopolitical zone, cashew is a significant cash crop with growing export potential, and producer communities are concentrated in ways that approximate emerging cluster structures. This study analyses the development trajectory of the cashew agribusiness cluster in Kwara State and evaluates its contribution to competitive advantage for value chain actors. Primary data were collected from 160 value chain actors including cashew farmers, processors, exporters, and supporting institutions through a structured survey and key informant interviews. Cluster competitive advantage was assessed using Porter's diamond framework adapted for the agricultural commodity context. Network analysis was applied to map inter-firm linkages and knowledge exchange patterns. Results indicate that geographic concentration provides modest economies of shared transport logistics and buyer access, but that knowledge spillovers between processing firms are limited by competitive secrecy and absence of cluster coordination institutions. Demand conditions are strong, driven by international market growth in cashew nuts, but raw nut quality consistency remains a competitive weakness. The study identifies the absence of a cluster coordination body as the primary institutional gap preventing the Kwara cashew cluster from reaching its competitive potential. Recommendations target the establishment of a Kwara Cashew Producers Association with formal export facilitation and quality standardisation functions. Keywords: agribusiness cluster, cashew, competitive advantage, Kwara State, value chain
