Financial Risk Management in Nigerian Commercial Banks: Strategies and Outcomes

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Commercial banks in Nigeria operate within a risk-intensive environment shaped by macroeconomic volatility, currency instability, regulatory tightening, and evolving credit market dynamics. This study evaluates financial risk management strategies and their outcomes in selected commercial banks in Nigeria, focusing on credit risk, liquidity risk, market risk, and operational risk. Primary data are gathered from 120 risk management professionals across eight banks through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, while secondary data from financial statements supplement the analysis. The study assesses the adequacy of risk identification tools, risk quantification models, and risk mitigation instruments deployed by each institution, benchmarking them against the Basel III framework as adapted for Nigerian banks by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Data are analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. The theoretical grounding integrates enterprise risk management theory and the three-lines-of-defence governance model. The geographic spread of data collection covers bank operations in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, and Port Harcourt to capture risk profiles from commercially distinct environments. Existing literature from Nigerian banks suggests that credit risk remains the dominant concern, followed closely by operational risk amplified by information technology infrastructure gaps and fraud. The study evaluates whether recent investments in risk management technology have produced measurable improvements in risk-adjusted performance metrics. Findings are intended to support risk officers, internal auditors, and the Central Bank of Nigeria's Financial Stability Department in strengthening systemic risk governance frameworks. Keywords: financial risk management, commercial banks, credit risk, Basel III, Nigeria
