The Use of French in Nigerian Nollywood Films: A Linguistic Analysis

The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, increasingly incorporates French language elements in its productions as a reflection of Nigeria's expanding commercial and diplomatic engagement with francophone Africa, yet the linguistic dimensions of French use in Nollywood films have not been documented. This study analyses the linguistic features and functional patterns of French language use in a corpus of twenty Nollywood films released between 2019 and 2024 in which French words, phrases, or scenes appear. Qualitative content analysis and functional linguistic analysis were applied to identified French-language instances, classifying each by speaker identity, communicative function, sociolinguistic marking, and accuracy of French usage. Results show that French appears most frequently as a prestige marker attributed to characters positioned as educated, cosmopolitan, or internationally mobile, with Lagos-based settings generating the highest French inclusion frequency. French is predominantly deployed in brief insertions within English-dominant dialogue rather than as a sustained communicative medium, functioning indexically to signal character social positioning. Accuracy of French usage across the corpus was variable, with phonological and grammatical errors present in approximately 40% of French-language instances, suggesting that French is employed for symbolic rather than linguistic precision purposes in most productions. The study argues that Nollywood's deployment of French reflects and reinforces French prestige indexing in the Nigerian popular cultural imagination. Recommendations target the Nigerian Film Corporation to encourage greater linguistic accuracy in French-language Nollywood content.
