📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the intelligence and diplomatic reporting functions of Nigerian ambassadors and other heads of mission, assessing how effectively Nigeria's diplomatic corps collects, analyses, and transmits strategic information to inform foreign policy decision-making at home. In modern diplomacy, ambassadors serve not only as representatives but also as intelligence assets, providing host-country analysis, early warning on political developments, and trade and investment information. Drawing on diplomatic theory and knowledge management frameworks, this research investigates the reporting protocols, analytical capacity, and information utilisation practices within Nigeria's foreign ministry system from 2020 to 2024. The study employs a qualitative methodology, drawing on semi-structured interviews with former ambassadors, career diplomats, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials in Abuja, complemented by document analysis of declassified diplomatic reporting samples and parliamentary testimony. The research examines the handling of political intelligence in three regions of strategic importance to Nigeria: West Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and Europe. Findings are expected to reveal institutional weaknesses in the reporting chain, including inadequate analytical training, poor information management systems, and limited feedback loops from headquarters to missions. Recommendations are directed at the reform of Nigeria's diplomatic reporting infrastructure and the professionalisation of its analytical capacity. Keywords: diplomatic reporting, intelligence, ambassadors, Nigeria, foreign policy decision-making.
