Assessment of Digital Literacy Among Library Staff of National Library of Nigeria

This study assessed the digital literacy levels of library staff at the National Library of Nigeria, with specific focus on the Abuja headquarters and the Lagos branch. Digital literacy is a prerequisite for effective participation in the management and delivery of modern library services, including e-resource management, digital cataloguing, and online user engagement. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were gathered from 80 library officers and assistants using a structured digital literacy assessment questionnaire covering five dimensions: basic computer skills, internet research, e-resource management, social media use for library promotion, and data security awareness. Findings revealed moderate digital literacy across basic computing tasks but significant gaps in e-resource management and data security. Younger staff performed better on social media and internet search competencies, while senior staff demonstrated stronger performance on print cataloguing and reference tasks. The study recommended that the National Library develop a digital upskilling programme stratified by career level and that digital literacy benchmarks be incorporated into performance appraisal criteria.
