📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined the constraints to library development in state polytechnics in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. Polytechnic libraries play a vital role in supporting the technical and vocational programmes offered by their parent institutions, yet development of these libraries is frequently hampered by systemic and institutional challenges. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from library staff, students, and management personnel in three state polytechnics using structured questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists. The study identified inadequate funding, poor physical infrastructure, insufficient and underqualified staff, outdated collections, and limited ICT facilities as the principal constraints to library development. Most polytechnic libraries lacked functional computers for public use, and internet connectivity was either absent or unreliable. The study recommended that the Kogi State government increase budgetary allocations to polytechnic libraries, compel institutions to meet National Board for Technical Education library accreditation standards, and develop a multi-year library improvement plan with clear milestones. Keywords: library development, constraints, state polytechnics, Kogi State, North Central Nigeria.
