Attitude of Academic Staff Towards Institutional Repository Deposit in Federal University Kashere Gombe State

This study investigated the attitudes of academic staff at the Federal University Kashere in Gombe State, North East Nigeria, towards depositing their research outputs in the university's institutional repository. Academic staff participation in self-archiving is essential for building a comprehensive institutional repository, yet attitudes towards deposit remain ambivalent in many Nigerian universities. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from 120 academic staff across five faculties using a Likert-scale attitude questionnaire. Findings revealed that most staff held moderately positive attitudes towards institutional repositories in principle but reported significant hesitancy around voluntary self-archiving. Key barriers included concerns about copyright infringement, perceived time costs, lack of awareness of the deposit process, and uncertainty about the peer-review status of repository content. Incentivisation and visible institutional support were identified as the strongest facilitators. The study recommended that the university implement a mandatory deposit policy, provide step-by-step self-archiving guides, and address copyright concerns through staff information sessions.
