Deploying Mobile Applications for Library Service Delivery in Nigerian State University Libraries

This study examined the deployment and use of mobile applications for library service delivery in selected state university libraries in Nigeria. Mobile applications offer libraries the opportunity to extend services including catalogue search, database access, reservation, and user notification to users' personal devices, improving accessibility and convenience. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from library systems officers and student users in twelve state university libraries across six geopolitical zones through structured questionnaires. The study found that mobile application deployment was limited to four of the twelve libraries, with varying functionality and user awareness. In libraries where apps were available, uptake was constrained by storage limitations on student devices and inconsistent university network access. Most students expressed willingness to use a well-designed library mobile app if it addressed their key needs: catalogue search, due date reminders, and database access. The study recommended investment in mobile app development or procurement, staff training in app management, and targeted marketing campaigns to drive adoption.
