Media Freedom and Political Accountability in Ekiti State: A Professional Assessment

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study provides a professional assessment of the state of media freedom and its relationship to political accountability in Ekiti State, examining the conditions under which journalists can effectively perform watchdog functions in a state characterised by high political volatility and frequent government changes. Ekiti State has experienced several gubernatorial changes through elections and court decisions since its creation, making it a particularly instructive context for examining media-politics interactions over shifting political regimes. Using a qualitative design, the study draws on structured interviews with 22 journalists, editors, and press freedom advocates working in Ado-Ekiti and other media markets in Ekiti State, as well as analysis of documented cases of journalist harassment and media censorship between 2019 and 2023. The watchdog press theory and the political communication framework are applied to evaluate how structural conditions of media ownership and regulation shape journalistic independence. Findings reveal that media organisations in Ekiti State face a politically polarised advertising market in which state government patronage is a primary revenue source, creating structural incentives for self-censorship. Journalists who have pursued investigative stories on state government financial management and security sector abuses have faced legal threats, revenue withdrawal, and physical intimidation. The South West geopolitical zone's generally higher civic awareness creates citizen demand for independent journalism but does not insulate journalists from political reprisals. Recommendations include state media freedom legislation, diversification of media revenue through reader-supported journalism models, and legal protections for investigative sources. Keywords: media freedom, political accountability, Ekiti State, press freedom, watchdog journalism
