Assessment of Nursing Management Practices for Postpartum Haemorrhage at University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Postpartum haemorrhage remains the leading direct cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria, with nursing management practices constituting a critical determinant of outcome. Aim: This study assessed nursing management practices for postpartum haemorrhage at University of Benin Teaching Hospital, South South Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey recruited 70 registered midwives and obstetric nurses through total enumeration. Data collection used a validated knowledge questionnaire, a practice checklist, and clinical record reviews. SPSS version 26 was used for analysis. Results: Adequate knowledge of uterotonic administration protocols was demonstrated by 69% of participants. However, only 54% consistently followed the active management of the third stage of labour sequence without prompting. Documentation of blood loss assessment was incomplete in 46% of reviewed records. Training recency and involvement in obstetric emergencies drills were positively associated with practice scores. Conclusion: Nursing management of postpartum haemorrhage requires urgent standardisation. The study recommends mandatory simulation-based obstetric emergency training, updated clinical protocols, and robust documentation systems in Nigerian obstetric units. Keywords: postpartum haemorrhage, nursing management, midwifery, Benin, maternal mortality.
