📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The quantitative assessment of archaeological heritage loss to development represents a significant evidence gap in Nigerian heritage management, with most accounts of site destruction being anecdotal, geographically fragmented, and methodologically inconsistent. This dissertation conducts the first nationally scoped, methodologically rigorous quantitative assessment of archaeological heritage loss to development in Nigeria, using a multi-scale analytical framework that integrates remote sensing, statistical modelling, and field-verified site condition assessment to estimate rates and spatial patterns of heritage destruction. The assessment draws on a nationally representative sample of five hundred registered archaeological sites stratified across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones and five development threat categories, including urban expansion, road construction, agricultural intensification, industrial development, and extractive industries. For each sampled site, a threat exposure score is calculated using GIS-based analysis of development footprint proximity, and a condition score is assigned through field inspection, aerial photograph interpretation, or proxy assessment. Statistical modelling of the relationship between threat exposure and condition score enables zone-level and national extrapolation of annual loss rates, expressed as the estimated proportion of registered site area experiencing significant disturbance per year. National results indicate an estimated average annual heritage loss rate of 4.2 percent of registered site area, with highest rates in the South West, South South, and North West zones, corresponding to urbanization pressure, oil infrastructure expansion, and large-scale irrigation development respectively. The dissertation translates these findings into a prioritised national site protection action plan, identifying the highest-impact interventions achievable with realistic institutional resource allocations. Keywords: heritage loss quantification, development threats, national assessment, remote sensing, Nigerian heritage management.
