Archaeological Evidence for Ancient Astronomical Knowledge and Calendrical Practices in Pre-colonial Northern Nigeria

Archaeoastronomy, the study of astronomical knowledge and practice in past societies through material and spatial evidence, has generated significant findings across the globe but remains an almost entirely absent subfield in Nigerian archaeological scholarship despite the documented astronomical knowledge embedded in oral traditions, architectural orientations, and ceremonial calendars of northern Nigerian societies. This dissertation investigates archaeological evidence for ancient astronomical knowledge and calendrical practices in pre-colonial northern Nigeria, developing a rigorous methodological framework that addresses the epistemological challenges of archaeoastronomical inference in the absence of written documentation. The study's empirical programme encompasses three analytical tracks: systematic architectural orientation analysis of a sample of two hundred pre-colonial structures in Borno, Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto states using precise azimuth measurements and horizon profiling; spatial analysis of cosmologically significant site layouts at royal palace complexes and ceremonial centres; and systematic collection of astronomical references in oral traditions, praise poetry, and historical documents from the region. Architectural orientation analysis reveals statistically non-random distributions of doorway and primary axis orientations at ceremonial and palatial structures, with preferred orientations clustering at azimuths consistent with sunrise at solstice and significant stellar rise events recorded in the oral astronomical corpus. Royal palace layouts at three sites show spatial axes interpretable as solar or lunar alignment markers. The dissertation develops a new theoretical framework termed embodied astronomical practice that situates astronomical knowledge in the practical and ceremonial routines of daily and seasonal life, contributing to both archaeoastronomy theory and northern Nigerian cultural history.
