A Theoretical Framework for Industry 4.0 Adoption in Nigerian Manufacturing: Barriers, Enablers, and Transformation Pathways

This study develops a theoretically grounded framework for Industry 4.0 adoption in the Nigerian manufacturing sector, addressing a critical gap in the global Industry 4.0 literature where sub-Saharan African industrial contexts are substantially underrepresented. Industry 4.0 technologies, encompassing the Industrial Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, advanced robotics, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence-driven process optimisation, hold transformative potential for manufacturing productivity; however, their adoption trajectories in developing country industrial systems diverge substantially from those observed in Germany, Japan, and the United States where most theoretical frameworks originate. Drawing on diffusion of innovation theory, dynamic capabilities theory, and institutional theory as complementary foundations, this research constructs a multi-level adoption framework that accounts for firm-level technological readiness, sectoral ecosystem characteristics, and national institutional environment factors. The framework is developed through a systematic literature review, grounded theory coding of qualitative data from forty-eight in-depth interviews with manufacturing executives and technology policymakers across six geopolitical zones, and quantitative validation through a national survey of three hundred and four manufacturing firms. Structural equation modelling confirms the framework's structural validity and identifies absorptive capacity and institutional regulatory support as the strongest cross-level enablers of adoption intention. Original contributions include a Nigerian manufacturing Industry 4.0 readiness index and a transformation pathway typology classifying firms into four adoption trajectory profiles.
